Opening academic year Faculty of Arts 2024: Arts Lecture by Ellen Rutten
Traditionally, the Faculty of Arts opens the academic year with the Arts Lecture. This year's 37th edition took place on Tuesday, 3 September in the Aula of the Academy Building. The lecture was delivered by Slavicist and professor Ellen Rutten and was titled ‘Why new stories matter in times of war’
Why new stories matter in times of war
In this war-torn time, it is of great importance to continue paying attention to the power of words and the stories we tell with them.
Slavicist and professor Ellen Rutten lived, traveled, and studied for a long time in Central and Eastern Europe. During the Arts Lecture, she shared her professional and personal insights on (re)reading stories from this region and other parts of the world. About her lecture, Rutten says: “Stories are much more than plain amusement. They help us to stay open, stay safe, and stay sane.”
Ellen Rutten (1975) is a Professor of Literature at the University of Amsterdam and co-founder of the academic solidarity project The University of New Europe. She studied Slavic Language and Literature at the University of Groningen. Her research interests include post-Soviet literature and art, digital media, social media, and memory discourse. In addition to her academic work, she writes background articles and essays, and contributes to various media and scholarly publications.
