Smart Buildings: explore the opportunities for your research

The University of Groningen is investing in smart buildings. Within the new Smart Buildings programme, extensive data is being collected on the usage of our buildings. Discover during this session on June 3 what the Smart Buildings programme entails and the possibilities it offers to you as a researcher.
Introducing the Smart Buildings programme
The Smart Buildings programme recently started. This programme is part of a broader long-term vision. In the upcoming year, the focus will be on the topics occupancy and energy to contribute to real estate optimization and a reduction in energy consumption. Through multiple pilots and subsequent scaling, insights will be gained into the utilization of spaces at the university. These insights can be used by various parties, for instance to find suitable work and study spaces, for investment decisions, scheduling, optimization of building installations, and aligning services to the needs.
Research
Many systems and sensors are already present in the buildings of the University of Groningen. These include motion sensors, reservation systems, WiFi access points, as well as climate sensors. Therefore, the Smart Buildings programme focuses on mainly using these existing data sources to gain new insights. All these systems and sensors generate data that is processed for the programme's purposes but could also be used for education and research.
As Smart Buildings team, we welcome researchers to engage with our activities. On the one hand, to offer the opportunity to utilise data from smart systems, within certain frameworks, for research. On the other hand, there are issues where research input is desirable.
Various research areas are relevant when considering the data that will be processed and the current issues. These include education logistics, facility management, workplace psychology, real estate development, user interfaces and privacy & security.
Introduction event on June 3
We are organizing an event on June 3. This event aims to inform you as a researcher about the Smart Buildings programme and to find opportunities for collaboration.
Registration is possible until May 24 by signing up via the registration button below. Note: 20 people can attend this event. If the session is already full, you will be placed on the reserve list.
