Privacy statement

The University of Groningen (UG) takes the utmost care when dealing with personal data. The UG wants you to know that personal information will always be processed correctly and with due care and attention. For this reason, the UG wants to be transparent about how it deals with your personal data.

The policy on data processing and protection is set out in a document entitled: General policy on protection of personal data by the University of Groningen. This document outlines the UG’s vision and basic principles regarding the protection of personal data. In addition, the UG has a General Privacy Statement. This privacy statement informs you about how the UG processes your personal information and it explains your rights regarding this. Which personal data are processed and why, is listed in the UG Register.

Requests to access data

You have the right to ask the UG for an overview of all of the personal data that has been collected concerning you, how it has been processed and how long it will be stored for. If you think that some of your personal data is incorrect or if you no longer want your data to be processed, you can ask for this data to be amended, for the UG to stop processing it or to have it deleted.

To do so, please send a written request to access data to the UG privacy team, via privacy@rug.nl.

Data breaches

A data breach occurs when personal information is destroyed, accessed or released without explicit permission. This includes leaking information (whether accidentally or intentionally), as well as the unlawful processing of personal data. The most common examples of data breaches are losing a USB memory device containing personal data, a computer being hacked or files containing personal data falling into the wrong hands via the waste paper bin.

If you encounter or suspect a breach of data, please report it immediately by emailing databreach@rug.nl.

Cookies

The University website uses both functional cookies – for example to remember language settings – and non-functional cookies. Functional cookies are used to provide services or to store your preferred settings. Some cookies, known as 'tracking cookies', are placed by third parties to track your surfing behaviour, but only with your permission. If you refuse these cookies, certain functionalities may be disabled on the website.

The website uses Google Analytics to map the traffic on the website. The data collected is used to improve the website. If legally obliged to do so, Google must transfer the information it collects by cookies or other means to third parties. Google may also transfer this information to third parties if the information is processed by Google on behalf of third parties. The University will not use the traffic data to track individual users.

In addition, embedded content is used on a number of pages. This could, for example, be a YouTube video, a widget or a social media button. When this information is loaded, cookies from the provider that supplies the information may also be transferred. The University of Groningen is not responsible for these cookies.

Cookies settings

All commonly used Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and their equivalents for mobile devices) offer an option to completely erase and permanently refuse cookies. The latest versions of these web browsers offer a ‘Do Not Track (Do not follow me)’ setting, preventing connected advertisement networks from mapping your behaviour.
