Update on renovation work in the Linnaeusborg building

02 July 2020

In recent months, a complex internal space redistribution plan has been set in motion in the Linnaeusborg building to create sufficient suitable laboratory space for both researchers and students. On the ninth floor of building wing 5172, the first phase has been completed: there are now two new chemical laboratories and the ventilation system has received a major upgrade. The next phase of the space redistribution plan is about to commence, including the cordoning of certain corridor zones as off 8 July 2020.

The purpose of this update is to inform you about the following:

  • Communication about the project
  • Upcoming renovation work

Communication about the project

A new web environment has been created to keep you better informed about the renovation work. You can access it via our FSE Intranet environment on My University or via www.rug.nl/GroundbreakingWork (where you will also find information about other UG construction projects).

This web environment provides:

  • More background information about the project
  • Handy overview of the renovation work, anticipated disruption and the work schedule
  • A floor plan showing what renovation work is to be carried out where (see example below)

The renovation team will make every effort to keep this information updated. If significant changes are made to the information, you will be notified via My University and/or via an internal email. We will also keep the AMV coordinators and secretariats informed of any local changes.

Upcoming renovation work

The second and last project phase will include renovation work on the eighth floor, where existing practical laboratories will be converted into biochemical laboratories for the Chemical Biology 1 (GBB) group and the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry. This will create space on the ninth floor for the creation of the last three chemical laboratories for ARC CBBC early in 2021.

Most of the work carried out during the summer will be on the eighth floor, where spaces will be converted and equipped for use by Chemical Biology 1. This group will then be able to move from the ninth to the eighth floor. The floor plan shows which spaces will be renovated, when and for whom.

Cordoning off the areas under construction | as off 8 July 2020
In the interests of safety, certain corridor zones and the staircase on the south side leading to the ninth floor will be cordoned off from Wednesday 8 July onwards (see areas highlighted in red). Staff members will be redirected via routes indicated with arrows. Please visit the web environment for more detailed information about anticipated disruption.
