Educational building Anda Kerkhoven Centre of UG and UMCG heading towards final phase

10 June 2024

The University of Groningen (UG) and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) are proud to announce that the Anda Kerkhoven Centre, located on the Healthy Ageing Campus, is heading towards its final phase. In the coming period, the new building (about 12,000 m2 GFA) will be thoroughly cleaned and equipped with tables, chairs and audio visual equipment. From September, the building, named after Groningen resistance heroine and medicine student Anda Kerkhoven, will be used for the first time by teachers and students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Engineering (Pharmacy programme).

Sustainable design

Designed by KAAN Architects, the building includes a teaching tower and a green roof garden, which contribute to a healthy and sustainable living environment. Besides optimal insulation and smart use of daylight, the building has 194 solar panels (420 Wp) and is prepared for thermal storage. The transparent foyer space acts as a new entrance to the Healthy Ageing Campus and encourages a relaxed atmosphere that promotes cooperation and knowledge transfer.

Symbolic significance of the Anda Kerkhoven Centre

The naming of the building, chosen from a competition among staff and students, honours the legacy of Anda Kerkhoven (1919-1945). A medical student in Groningen, she was a passionate pacifist who was active in the resistance during World War II. Her ideals and courage are now permanently remembered on campus, a place that fosters innovation and collaboration.

A view of the future

The completion of the Anda Kerkhoven Centre marks an important step towards a future-oriented and dynamic knowledge environment, where students, staff and visitors can meet and inspire each other in the field of Healthy Ageing. Part of the plans is integration of the buildings into a green landscape design that contributes to a healthy living environment and has a positive effect on the city's climate.
