Barry de Groot and Alexander Minnaert appointed members of Recognition Committee on Interventions of the Netherlands Youth Institue (NJi)
Barry de Groot and Alexander Minnaert have been appointed members of the Recognition Committee on Interventions of the Netherlands Youth Institue (NJi), subcommittee on developmental stimulation, education-related provision and youth welfare. Barry de Groot became a scientific committee member and Alexander Minnaert was appointed chairman. Minnaert had already been a member of this subcommittee for eight years.
The NJi Interventions Recognition Committee is a national committee that independently judges effective youth interventions. A youth intervention is a theoretically and practically well-considered, systematic approach to prevention, support and help with specific risks and problems. Interventions recognised by the committee are included in the database of Effective Youth Interventions. This database contains an overview of all recognised interventions per field of work. Clients, policymakers and implementers can access the database to consult interventions and make responsible choices.
The work fields are:
- Youth care and psychosocial/pedagogical prevention
- Youth health care, prevention and health promotion
- Development stimulation, education-related provision and youth welfare
- Judicial interventions
- Social support, participation and safety
- Sport and exercise
The quality of interventions in the field is not always known. To gain more insight into the theoretical foundations and the empirical evidential value of these interventions, they have been tested for quality, feasibility and effectiveness since 2007. The Recognition Committee does this on the basis of independent criteria.
Recognition Committee Interventions
The NJi is a national knowledge centre that collects, enriches, interprets and shares current knowledge on growing up. It does so by means of, among other things, the database of Effective Youth Interventions. This database contains descriptions of programmes for support and help with growing up and parenting. The interventions included in the database have been assessed independently by the national NJi Interventions Recognition Committee.
The Recognition Committee Interventions is composed of members from the worlds of science, policy and practice and is supported by the Partnership for the Recognition of Interventions. In this partnership, several knowledge institutes work on the recognition trajectory: Sport & Exercise Knowledge Centre, Movisie, Netherlands Youth Institute, RIVM Department for Healthy Living, Trimbos Institute and Vilans. The knowledge institutes have no substantive role in assessing the interventions. They support and coordinate the recognition process for the submitters and for the subcommittees. Each subcommittee is supported by the Netherlands Youth Institute (NJi).

Alexander Minnaert is Professor of Inclusive and Special Needs Education and Clinical Educational Sciences at the University of Groningen.
