Stefany Moreno Gamez wins third prize in ‘For Women in Science’ Rising Talents

09 December 2019

Stefany Moreno Gamez, PhD Student at GELIFES on Evolutionary Systems Biology, has won third place (worth EUR 1,000) in the ‘For Women in Science’ Rising Talent Prize. With her research, Moreno Gamez wants to discover principles of organization of bacterial communities in our body that can be used to understand and eventually predict how health-related community functions result from the behavior and interactions of individual bacteria. “We currently know plenty about the composition of these communities and how this composition correlates with health and disease. However, we do not understand yet why these correlations exist, as we barely know how these communities function, assemble and evolve.” The prize is an initiative of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science programme to promote women in science in early career stages. This is the first year the prize has been awarded in the Netherlands.
