Physics and Chemistry student Marit Fiechter wins GUF 100 Prize

06 July 2018

At the UG Summer Ceremony on July 6th, Marit Fiechter has been awarded the GUF 100 Prize of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), making her the best student of the Faculty. Fiechter is a Bachelor’s student in both Physics and Chemistry. She was chosen from three FSE students nominated by students and teaching staff of the Faculty last March.

The prize consists of a scholarship for study or research worth €2.500 and is annually awarded to the best student of each faculty.

Impressive study results
Fiechter’s study results are very impressive. She obtained three first-year degrees (Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy), all summa cum laude. Her average grade is 9.48: 10 times she received a grade 10, and all her grades are 8.5 or higher.
Furthermore, she won several prizes in national and international scientific university challenges, among them a bronze medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In 2017, she took an internship in Astrochemistry in prof. Jes Jørgensen’s group at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, where she analysed the submillimeter spectrum of a solar-mass protostar, listed the unidentified lines and proposed molecules the lines may have originated from. She is now co-authoring a paper on one of the results.
