Science Denial and the Attacks against Scientists: How Political Interests Compromise Trust in Science and Scientific Research

Abstract:

Science denial and hostility towards scientists has substantially increased. Scientists in various fields of research have been attacked personally (even with death threats) and professionally (their reliability and reputation are undermined). This affects both public trust in science and scientific research. Focusing on the situation in climate science, I will provide some information about how public trust is affected by "manufactured doubt" and highlight a number of typical epistemic effects that the attacks on science have on scientific research.
