Aukje Nieuwenhuis wins Avril McDonald Award 2023
PhD candidate Aukje Nieuwenhuis has won the Avril McDonald Award 2023. Nieuwenhuis received the award for her master’s thesis titled “Gender-stereotypical labor market behavior across generations: evidence from conditional second moments.” It is the third award she has received for her thesis.
Gender inequality
Nieuwenhuis' thesis focuses on the persistence of gender inequality in the labor market, specifically investigating the intergenerational transmission of stereotypical labor market behavior. She rigorously tackles this societal-relevant research question, employing state-of-the-art econometric techniques to disentangle causality and selection effects. Her findings reveal a negative causal link between gender-stereotypical career choices of parents and daughters, challenging prevailing assumptions and contributing to the understanding of the intergenerational transmission of stereotypical behavior.
Third prize
Earlier this year, Nieuwenhuis also received the FEBRI Research Master Graduate Award, and earlier this year, she was awarded the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW) Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs 2023. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).
The Avril McDonald Award
Each year, the Rosalind Franklin Fellows (RFFs) of the University of Groningen present the Avril McDonald Award to a female student of the university who defended her master’s thesis in the past year. The Avril McDonald Award is dedicated to recognizing the outstanding achievements of female students in their respective academic fields, spanning across all faculties and research domains. The award is a memorial to Avril McDonald, a Rosalind Franklin Fellow who unexpectedly passed away in 2010, at the age of 44.
