Sarah Fuchs & Lisa Maron| Faces of FEB
The Faculty of Economics and Business is a faculty with a great diversity of people who all have an impact, big or small, on science and society. But who are these people? Within 'Faces of FEB', we connect with different students, staff members, and faculty researchers and give them a little peek into their world. This edition: Green Office student ambassadors Sarah Fuchs and Lisa Maron. The Zernike Green Office Embassy is open to all students from FEB, the Faculty of Spacial Sciences (FSS) and the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) who wish to engage in constructive conversations and brainstorm ideas for a greener future.
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Meet Sarah (Austrian) and Lisa (German), two dynamic individuals who weave sustainability into every aspect of their lives. Their sustainability journey began through academia, fueling their desire to make a difference. Sarah, pursuing a dual degree in Change Management and Strategic Innovation Management, is driven by her love for our planet's natural wonders. Lisa, a Master's student specialising in Sustainability within Change Management, has championed sustainability since her undergraduate days.
2. Why did you apply for the role of ambassador for the Green Office, and what has been your experience in this role so far?
Sarah and Lisa were drawn to the role of Green Office ambassadors by a shared mission: to ignite a spark of sustainability in their community. Lisa admits that "it is a lot of effort to put together even small events, coordinating with third parties and motivating students to join and visit our events". Both have encountered many students who needed to be made aware of the sustainability possibilities offered at the UG. This has motivated them even further to work on the visibility of the Green Office.
3. How does sustainability play a role in your FEB study programme, and do you think it is beneficial for this topic to be included in the curriculum?
Sarah and Lisa believe that sustainability plays a significant role in their study programmes, and including it in their curriculum is crucial to preparing the next generation of students to be future business leaders who can guide the change towards sustainability. Lisa, for example, chose the Sustainability focus area within the Change Management Master programme. She now has a sustainability-oriented course in each block of the academic year. Apart from the focus area, the Master's programme also incorporates the sustainability theme throughout different lectures and assignments. Sarah echoes this sentiment with extracurricular activities. All students can take action by joining the Green Office, QUEST, New Energy Academy, and Learning Communities about social change in Groningen.
4. What would you like to achieve in your role as Green Office ambassador?
As ambassadors and chairs of the Zernike Green Office Embassy, we want to be the hub for stimulating discussion, spreading the word about all aspects of sustainability and motivating people to join our events to live a more sustainable student life. We understand the importance of creating a safe space for individuals to express their ideas, share their concerns, and explore innovative solutions which they can realise. We aim to organise educational fun events based on the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental. Think about workshops on reducing food waste, lectures, panel discussions, movie nights, pub quizzes and more.
