AI in Higher Education

Research-Based Integration and Practice
students working in groups

Although the number of AI tools for education is vast, the field is still in its infancy. As a result, there is limited understanding of how to use the tools effectively in educational settings. Only a few scientific studies have examined the impacts of integrating AI integration on educational activities and assessments. This raises an important question: How can educational activities be (re)designed to be AI-compatible while minimizing risks such as overreliance and deskilling?

The program covers the impact of AI on all three components of Constructive Alignment (Learning outcomes, Learning activities and Assessment) and addresses the different impacts on different Bloom’s levels (Bloom et al., 1956).

This summer school is based on the AI for Instructors training of the ESI/RUG and is organised in cooperation with the Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology and AI'.

This summer school is designed for teachers and those who are in training to become a teacher in higher education who are familiar with AI concepts but seek research-based practice to integrate AI tools into their teaching.

It is expected that the participants have a sufficient command of the English language to actively participate in the discussions and to present their own work in English.

Course schedule

Each day of the summer school begins with an expert-led session that introduces participants to a particular AI tool or development in education. Participants then work in small groups to apply these insights by (re)designing an educational activity that they can implement in their own teaching. On the final day, participants will present their redesigned activities and receive feedback from the experts.
