Can you introduce yourself? - Who are you, what do you study, and where do you work?

Hey there! My name is Bart and I am 22 years old. I have already finished my Bachelor of Spatial Planning & Design in 2022, after which I started with my Master’s degree in Society, Sustainability & Planning. However, besides studying, I also have two jobs that keep me busy. One of them is working for the cinema Pathé Groningen. Here, it is my job to make sure every visitor has the best movie experience. Though it is a very diverse job, some examples of my tasks are helping visitors with buying their tickets, making sure visitors can take their favourite snack to their movie and keeping the building clean throughout the day. Next to that, my employer encourages me to have a chat with visitors. As I am a very social person and enjoy talking to people, I would say this job fits me quite well! Besides working at the cinema, I also work for the events team of the University of Groningen. I help and guide high school students in figuring out what they are interested in. My colleagues and I travel to high schools throughout the Netherlands to give presentations and workshops, either targeted at students aged around 15 who need to choose their high school courses, or targeted at students who are nearing the end of high school. I try to help them figure out which discipline they want to pursue and talk about all the other things that they can expect when they start studying. I also work at the open days of the University to answer any questions from high school students about studying and the University of Groningen. I enjoy this job a lot because I can help a lot of students with their decisions, as they are often much more comfortable sharing their thoughts with someone a bit closer to their age. 

How do you manage your time between lectures, assignments, and work shifts at Pathé and the UG? Any tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

As you can imagine, it is not always easy to manage my time between my lectures, assignments, exams and shifts at Pathé and the University of Groningen. I must admit that I have decided to spread out my Master’s degree over one and a half years instead of one, because it would have been very intense otherwise. However, it is still really important for me to keep an agenda and to plan ahead. Luckily, both of my jobs are quite flexible. At the cinema, I usually work two evenings a week in the cinema, once during the week and once in the weekend. My evening shifts start at 6 PM, so I can study throughout the day and work in the evening. I can also change my availability per block, to make sure my schedule does not get mixed up. The work I do for the University is even more flexible. Apart from the Bachelor's Open Days, there are barely any fixed dates that are mandatory. My employers put all of the available shifts on a website in advance, after which I can indicate for which shifts I would be available. That way, I never get planned for shifts that I am not available for, as long as I keep a good agenda at least!

To keep a healthy work-life balance, I would first advise anyone to look for a job that they enjoy doing. Even if a job pays well, I think it will eventually exhaust you, which will also negatively impact studying and other aspects of your life. However, even though I enjoy both of my jobs, I also need to make sure that I have enough free time in my agenda to do anything beside working and studying, like seeing my friends and exercising!

Is working at the Pathé and the UG just a way to pay the bills, or do you see it as a potential career path? Has working there influenced your future aspirations?

As much as I enjoy both of my jobs, I do not consider them as a potential career path. I am still mainly focused on finishing my Master’s degree and eventually finding a job within the discipline of Spatial Planning. Working at the cinema has always been a job on the side for me. Most of my colleagues are students and the majority of employees quit after finishing their degree. The work that I am doing for the UG is more closely related to my future aspirations. I enjoy giving presentations and/or workshops. This is something that I would like to apply in my future career in Spatial Planning. In the end, I need these side jobs to pay for my tuition, rent and other expenses. By working a bit more, I also try to minimise my student debt.

What should one keep in mind when looking for a part-time job? Did you use any specific resources or platforms, like Brightspace or University job fairs, to find your current job? And do you have any insider tips for fellow students on navigating the Groningen student job market?

I think it comes in handy to take some time to figure out which job suits you. It can be frustrating or difficult when you notice that you do not like your job after just having started with it. I would advise you to ask your friends or fellow students about their side job, because they are much more likely to be honest about how they feel about their job. This should give you a better idea of which jobs might be a good match for you. 

Next to this, you could make use of platforms or employment agencies that provide vacancies for students, however, I did not make use of them myself. I had already done some other jobs before that I did not enjoy too much, so I preferred to critically think about which job I would actually like to do. I also got some tips from friends and family about which job might suit me. I would also argue that it is important to think about how much you would want to work beforehand, so you can communicate this clearly to your potential employer. You still need time to study of course!

What you think employers look for from students?

I think that as of now, there is quite a big shortage of employees in the city of Groningen, so any potential employer should be quite hesitant with their demands. I think there will always be a side job available. However, I would argue that many employers will look for people who are flexible in their working times and that many side jobs for students involve social skills. Nevertheless, you can always look for a side job where it is not necessary to be very talkative. Lastly, for any international students who do not speak Dutch: although speaking Dutch is appreciated, there are also many international students working in Groningen who do not speak Dutch, so do not worry about that too much!

NL - Wil je weten hoe het is om een bijbaan te hebben naast je studie? Of wil je graag een bijbaan, maar weet je niet waar je moet beginnen? In deze blog vertelt student Bart over zijn bijbaantjes bij Pathé Groningen en de RUG. Ook geeft hij tips over het vinden van een leuke bijbaan.

Hoi! Mijn naam is Bart en ik ben 22 jaar oud. Ik heb in 2023 mijn bachelor Spatial Planning & Design afgerond en ben nu bezig met de master Society, Sustainability & Planning. Naast studeren heb ik ook twee bijbaantjes. Een daarvan is werken bij de bioscoop Pathé Groningen. Ik zorg ervoor dat bezoekers de beste filmervaring hebben. Mijn werk is erg divers. Ik help bezoekers met het kopen van een ticket en zorg ervoor dat bezoekers hun favoriete snack mee de zaal in kunnen nemen. Daarnaast hou ik gedurende de dag het pand netjes. Verder maak ik ook graag een praatje met bezoekers. Aangezien ik best sociaal ben past deze baan goed bij mij! Naast mijn werk bij de bioscoop werk ik ook bij het voorlichting & evenemententeam van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Hier help en begeleid ik middelbare scholieren bij het maken van hun profiel- en studiekeuze. Dit doen mijn collega's en ik voornamelijk door voorlichtingen, presentaties, workshops en informatiemarkten te verzorgen. Ik reis samen met collega's naar middelbare scholen door heel Nederland en help mee op de open dagen van de Rijksuniversiteit. Tijdens deze activiteiten vertel ik scholieren wat zij kunnen verwachten van het studentenleven. Ik vind dit werk ontzettend leuk omdat ik het gevoel heb dat ik veel leerlingen kan helpen met het maken van moeilijke keuzes. Ik denk dat zij dit toch liever bespreken met iemand die nog in de buurt komt van hun leeftijd.

Hoe ga je om met de tijd tussen colleges, studeren, en werken bij Pathé en de RUG? Heb je tips voor een gezonde balans tussen werk en privé?

Zoals je je misschien kan voorstellen is het niet altijd even makkelijk om mijn colleges, opdrachten, tentamens en diensten bij Pathé en de RUG te combineren. Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik heb besloten om mijn master te verspreiden over anderhalf jaar in plaats van een jaar, anders werd het wel heel pittig. Toch is het nog steeds erg belangrijk om mijn agenda goed bij te houden en vooruit te plannen. Gelukkig zijn mijn beide bijbaantjes erg flexibel. Bij de bioscoop werk ik vaak twee avonden in de week, waarvan een avond in het weekend. De avonddiensten bij Pathé beginnen om zes uur ’s avonds, waardoor ik overdag kan studeren en in de avond kan werken. Ik kan ook mijn beschikbaarheid per blok aanpassen, zodat ik mijn werk om mijn studie heen kan plannen. Mijn werk bij de RUG is zelfs nog flexibeler. Mijn werkgevers zetten alle beschikbare diensten vooraf op een website, zodat ik aan kan geven wanneer ik beschikbaar ben. Ik word nooit ingepland op momenten waarop ik eigenlijk niet kan, zolang ik mijn agenda maar op orde heb! 

Om een goede balans te houden tussen je werk en privéleven, wil ik als tip geven om een bijbaan te vinden die je leuk vindt. Ook al betaalt het nog zo goed, als je je bijbaantje niet leuk vindt, ga je er op een gegeven moment echt zat van zijn. Dat kan uiteindelijk ook een negatieve invloed hebben op je studie en andere dingen in je leven. Maar ondanks dat ik mijn baantjes allebei erg leuk vind, moet ik er ook echt voor zorgen dat ik genoeg tijd overhoud om iets anders te doen dan werken en studeren. Zoals afspreken met vrienden en sporten!

Is werken bij Pathé en de RUG alleen een manier om de rekeningen te betalen of zie je het ook als een mogelijk carrièrepad? Hebben je bijbanen je ambities voor de toekomst beïnvloed?

Ik ben erg tevreden met mijn bijbaantjes, maar toch denk ik niet dat ik serieus overweeg om er mijn carrière van te maken. Ik ben nog steeds vooral gefocust op het afronden van mijn master, om uiteindelijk binnen het werkveld van gebiedsontwikkeling een baan te gaan zoeken. Mijn werk bij Pathé is eigenlijk altijd een bijbaantje voor mij geweest. Verder zijn ook bijna al mijn collega’s student, waarvan het grootste deel stopt na het behalen van hun diploma. Ik denk dat mijn werk voor de universiteit wel iets dichter in de buurt komt van wat ik in de toekomst wil gaan doen qua werk. Ik vind het geven van presentaties en workshops erg leuk, maar dat zou ik dan liever willen toepassen bij een toekomstige baan in gebiedsontwikkeling. Uiteindelijk heb ik mijn bijbaantjes vooral nodig om mijn collegegeld, huur en andere kosten te betalen. Hiermee probeer ik ook mijn studieschuld beperkt te houden.

Waar moet je op letten als je op zoek bent naar een bijbaan? Heb je specifieke platforms gebruikt om je huidige baan te vinden, zoals de RUG's Career Services? En heb je nog insidertips voor medestudenten over het vinden van een bijbaan in Groningen?

Ik adviseer om de tijd te nemen voor het uitzoeken van een bijbaan. Het kan erg frustrerend en moeilijk zijn als je je bijbaan eigenlijk helemaal niet leuk vindt terwijl je pas net bent begonnen. Daarom raad ik aan om je vrienden en medestudenten te vragen wat voor bijbanen zij hebben. Zij zijn waarschijnlijk eerlijk over wat ze echt van hun bijbaan vinden. Dat geeft een beter beeld van de baantjes die bij je passen. Daarnaast kun je overwegen om naar de vacatures bij een uitzendbureau te kijken, hoewel ik daar zelf geen gebruik van heb gemaakt. Ik had al ervaring met baantjes die ik minder leuk vond, dus wilde ik goed nadenken over wat ik kon gaan doen. Ook kreeg ik wel eens tips van vrienden en familie over baantjes die misschien bij mij pasten. Ik denk dat het handig is om van tevoren na te denken over hoe vaak en hoe lang je wil werken en om dit duidelijk te communiceren naar je eventuele werkgever. Je hebt natuurlijk ook nog tijd nodig om te studeren!

Wat denk je dat werkgevers van studenten verwachten?

Voor zover ik weet is er op het moment een behoorlijk tekort aan werknemers in Groningen, dus ik verwacht dat veel werkgevers niet te streng zullen zijn met hun eisen. Er is altijd wel iets te vinden. Ik denk dat de meeste werkgevers mensen zoeken die flexibel zijn in hun werktijden en van je verwachten dat je een beetje sociaal bent. Ondanks dat zijn er ook bijbaantjes te vinden waar je niet te veel hoeft te praten. Tenslotte, hoewel het wel wordt gewaardeerd als je Nederlands kan spreken, zijn er ook genoeg internationale studenten die dit niet doen en toch een bijbaan hebben. De Nederlandse taal hoeft dus geen probleem te zijn!
