Zwemfest 2019

I know I said a few weeks ago that festival season was over - but I was wrong! The indoor festival scene has started again, and the annual Zwemfest has returned to Groningen. Hosted in Vera tonight, many artists like Tape Toy, Niko and Slack Attack will be performing. While I don’t know any of the artists, the general vibe at Zwemfest is described as “swimming in music”, which I assume can be categorized to alternative, which sounds pretty good to me.

Klein Berlijn

It’s that time of the year again! Groningen’s biggest vintage thrift shopping market, Klein Berlijn, is returning to Groningen this Sunday. The entire Grote Markt will be transformed into a thrift shop, with dozens of stands displaying timeless fashion items looking for a new owner (how I found my favorite cable-knit sweater last year). Just in case you haven’t spent enough money on secondhand, vintage jean jackets and shoes, there will also be enough food trucks where you can spend the rest of your money.

United Kitchen International Dinner

The first edition of this school year of the United Kitchen International Dinner will be hosted this Sunday. United Kitchen is set up by a group of 10 students, who organize multicultural dinners together with women with a migration background, and all profits go to the women to help them with their integration.

Sustainable Indoor Gardening

Having a hard time keeping your plants alive? Saturday afternoon, a sustainable indoor gardening tutorial will be given at LUST. You’ll learn how to take care of specific plants, how much water you need to give them and how to use your own food waste as fertilizer, because who doesn’t want to use garbage again???

Oktofest

Why wait till October actually starts to already start the Oktoberfest celebrations? Friday, EM2 at the Old Sugar Factory terrain will transform into Germany, so you can be expecting long beer tables, beer glasses, dirndls, pretzels, bratwurst and anything else you imagine at a typical Oktoberfest.

International Craft Beer Festival Groningen

Calling all craft beer lovers - this weekend BaxBier will be hosting the third edition of the International Craft Beer Festival at their brewery on the Friesestraatweg. If you’re tired of the regular craft beers that you can get everywhere and really want to impress your friends at your next party, check out the festival and maybe you’ll discover your new favorite beer. Disclaimer: you’ll probably be very, very broke after attending this beer festival.

050&Mode x Sustainable Moments

With Sustainability Week coming up in a few weeks, there are lots of little sustainable movements popping up around Groningen. This Saturday throughout the city center, Sustainable Moments will team up with shops in Groningen to create a fun, sustainable shopping experience. To get some inspiration about sustainable fashion collections, there will be a main stage on the Grote Markt displaying different sustainable outfits.

The Undutchables

Still getting settled in the Netherlands after your move from abroad? The Undutchables will be organizing a fun information evening with a typical Dutch meal for new (and old!) international students, where you can discuss all the weird things the Dutch people do, and natives can explain to you why they do that. A good opportunity to meet new people from different cultures, or just to complain about Dutch people.
