Groningen is a lot more than its fantastic student life – it offers a gold mine of cultural experiences that will surely attract locals and internationals alike. The city has a rich history as shown by its ancient buildings and monuments, and is also home to fascinating museums, a variety of theatrical events, and cultural workshops.

Would you like to explore Groningen beyond the typical university and bar scene that reveals a side of the city full of artistic and historical treasures?

Keep reading to take a break from the usual routines and immerse yourself in the diverse cultural experiences that the Groningen province has to offer and you'll definitely discover a new appreciation for the place we spend so much time in!

1. Museums

Groningen is home to many museums, each offering art, history, and culture. The Groninger Museum is known for its striking modern architecture, and walking in you can feel the creative energy emanating from the walls. Best part? It’s completely free for all students!

Other notable museums include the University Museum with scientific exhibits (also free for students), the Storyworld Museum of comics and games at Forum, and the Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam focusing on the Peat district's history, less than an hour away by train!

For a touch of nobility, visit the historic Menkemaborg Castle Museum in Uithuizen, which can also be reached by train in less than an hour.

2. Theatres

Are you passionate about dancing, singing, acting, or cracking jokes? Or maybe you enjoy watching others perform these arts? If so, Groningen's theatre scene is sure to captivate you. The city boasts a wide range of student groups offering international stand-up comedy, theatre, and film.

Stadsschouwburg (SPOT), one of the oldest theatres, hosts classical plays and contemporary productions but also comedy performances and much more, right in the heart of the city!

MartiniPlaza is a versatile venue for large-scale performances, including musicals, concerts & sports games.

The Grand Theatre, located in the Grote Markt since 1929, presents experimental and avant-garde shows. Smaller theatres like Theater de Machinefabriek offer intimate settings for innovative and community-driven performances. Although most performances take place in Dutch, this unique cultural scene of Groningen is something to experience at least once!

3. The Province

Groningen is one of Europe’s oldest man-made landscapes, rich in history and character.

Outside the city of Groningen, you will find a wide variety of landscapes with national parks like Lauwersmeer and cultural landmarks such as historic churches and the Bourtange fortress.

The Bourtange fortress especially stands out: it is a star-shaped fortification dating back to the 16th century, originally built for defence during the Eighty Years' War. Today, the whole village is a well-preserved open-air museum showcasing historical buildings, reenactments of pitched battles, and events.

The province of Groningen consists of seven regions, including Westerkwartier and Eemsdelta, each offering unique experiences from scenic nature trails to cultural events. For a change of scenery visit one of the islands of the Wadden Sea: a unique tidal area with rich biodiversity and opportunities for seal watching (yes, seal watching!) and mudflat hiking.

Traditional Dutch villages and historic sites like estate houses add infinitely to the region's charm.

4. Cultural Activities

If you enjoy creating art, you can join a culture centre like Usva, where they offer classes in photography, music, dance, and acting.

Forum Groningen hosts film-related workshops, offering a chance to meet fellow movie enthusiasts. The city also offers numerous choirs, student orchestras, and cultural events hosted by ESN throughout the year, including language cafes and talent shows.
