Prospective Honours College student

Not only will you receive intensive, small-scale teaching with a group of like-minded and motivated students but you will also receive a special Honours Diploma once you have completed the programme, as well as a letter of recommendation from the Rector Magnificus of the University of Groningen. In addition, a note will be made on the Diploma Supplement to your Bachelor's diploma that you have completed the Honours Programme. This will give you a head start when applying to a selective Master's degree programme in the Netherlands or abroad and later on in the job market.

At the University College and at the Roosevelt Academy a distinctive, broad Bachelor's degree programme - a liberal arts programme of 180 ECTS credit points - is taught on a separate campus. The Groningen Honours College provides an extracurricular Honours Programme worth 45 ECTS. You simply live and study in Groningen, but there is a separate Honours Community room in the Academy Building, where you can meet your fellow Honours students.

That's a difficult question. It depends on where your interests lie specifically, as well as on what you want to achieve and how much you are prepared to do to attain it. Doing a second degree programme in some instances could increase your chances on the job market. You will, however, probably take longer to complete your programmes and will have to organize and plan a lot since the two schedules often do not fit. An Honours Programme is a much broader programme that takes your regular degree programme into consideration. You will be part of a group of like-minded students from both your own degree programme and from other ones. Your personal development will also receive attention.

The Honours College will increase your study load by 25%, which roughly means 10-12 hours more studying per week, if you normally were to spend 40 hours a week studying. If your regular degree programme is easy for you to keep up with, you will still have time to relax and enjoy yourself in other ways besides doing the extra programme.
The Honours Programme schedule will not conflict with your Faculty schedule. The University part of the programme will usually be scheduled in the late afternoon or early evening.

You will not have to pay extra tuition fees for the Honours College - however, you should bear in mind that there are extra costs involved for books, excursions, etc. For the Summer School at the end of year 2 you will be asked to pay a contribution to cover travel and accommodation expenses of 33%, yet no more than € 500.

It's possible in principle. According to the Honours Programme Teaching and Examinations Regulations, a student may request permission, for example, to do part of the Honours programme at a university abroad or to take longer to complete the Honours Programme. Whether or not permission is granted will depend, inter alia, on the study progress, the student's personal circumstances and the nature of the modules which would be followed abroad.

Yes, you will receive a thorough and proper eduction. The Honours College is simply an extra track for highly motivated students who would like to do something extra (in both a broadening and deeping sense) besides their regular degree programme.
