DuPont Young Professor Award for systems biologist Matthias Heinemann

22 June 2011

Prof. Matthias Heinemann of the Molecular Systems Biology group (Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute) is awarded one of the DuPont Young Professor Awards 2011. He will receive 75,000 dollar for his research.

Heinemann investigates how cells adapt their internal processes to changes in their environment, for example to constantly changing food sources. His research aims at generating a systems understanding about central metabolism – a complex cellular network with significant importance for biotechnology, ageing, health and disease.

He has been an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen since 2009 and previously worked for ETH Zurich.

The DuPont Young Professors programme supports promising young scientists involved in research that could be interesting to the chemical concern in the long term. This year eleven of the awards went to young professors associated with American universities and six to professors from the rest of the world, with Prof. Heinemann being the only awardee from Europe.
