The pre-master is designed to prepare you for the MSc in Cultural Geography by focusing on essential research methods, including formulating research questions, understanding theoretical foundations, and applying research techniques.

This programme serves as the perfect bridge, whether you come from an applied sciences background or have a university degree but lack sufficient credits in research methods. It will help you fill those gaps and ensure you are fully prepared for the master's programme. By strengthening your research skills and academic foundation, you will begin your journey with the confidence and knowledge needed to tackle the challenges ahead, and enjoy the process along the way. It is the ideal way to ensure you are not only ready for the master's but set up for success from day one!

Am I the right fit?

This pre-master is perfect for you if:

  • You are an HBO graduate, or
  • You have a university degree but you have less than 10 ECTs in research methods.
What will I learn?

Students will be able to achieve one or more of the following learning objectives:

  1. Qualitative Research Design
    Design, conduct, and critically reflect on qualitative research by formulating research objectives, developing theoretical frameworks and conceptual models, applying data collection and analysis techniques, addressing ethical issues, and presenting their findings.

  2. Climate Data and Adaptation
    Describe methods of climate data production, recognize data limitations, assess climate variability and change, address challenges in climate adaptation, utilize open-access climate datasets, and support decision-making for climate adaptation.

  3. Data Analysis and Interpretation
    Understand data sampling techniques, assess variables and their limitations, analyze data in the context of research design, interpret results, and report on methods, data, and findings, reflecting on their process.

Students will be assessed through quizzes, assignments, participation, or exams.

How many courses will I take?

We offer three methods courses, and the Admissions Board will determine which of these courses will be included in each applicant’s pre-master’s programme. The courses are tailored to the individual needs of each student, so depending on the Admissions Board’s decision, students may be required to take one or two of these courses:

The courses are offered in different packages and time slots, all designed to help you build a solid foundation in research methods.

When and where are classes held?

Classes start in February 2025. A detailed timeline will follow in the coming weeks.

The sessions are primarily held on-site in Leeuwarden, though international students have the option to attend online.

What is the expected workload?

The pre-master is worth 5/10 ECTS, depending on whethe rthe student is asked to take one or two courses. This corresponds to a total workload of approximately 140/280 hours.

Each course consists of two sessions per week of two hours each, with the remaining time (around 100 hours) dedicated to self-study and completing assignments.

What are the costs?

The fees for the pre-master are as follows:

  • One course (5 ECTS)

    • NL/EU students: € 210
    • Non-EU/EEA students: € 1,390
  • Two courses (10 ECTS)

    • NL/EU students: € 420
    • Non-EU/EEA students: € 2,780
How can I apply?

The application steps are:

  1. Submit your application for Cultural Geography in Studielink;

  2. The Admissions Board reviews applications to determine eligibility for the premaster;

  3. The applicant will be instructed on how to register for the premaster.

The application round opens on 1st of October 2024.
The application deadline is 12th of January 2025.
