Femke Vrenegoor is a lecturer sustainability in hospitality at NHL-Stenden Femke Vrenegoor is a lecturer sustainability in hospitality at NHL Stenden Hotel Management School, and an external PhD student at Campus Fryslân. She is working on her PhD thesis on understanding the sustainability stance of micro and small sized accommodation entrepreneurs (supervised by professor Gjalt de Jong and Professor Elena Cavagnaro).
This PhD thesis addresses the motives of entrepreneurs to engage in pro-social and pro-environmental behaviour, the individual values they hold and the influence of those on the number and type of CSR measures implemented in their organization. A better understanding of the antecedents of pro-social and pro-environmental behaviour is important as it may help to nudge the entrepreneur towards better, more sustainable behaviour. It is (s)he who sets the strategy for their company, decides whether to incorporate sustainable development goals and to what extent.
In three empirical chapters, the PhD thesis analyses the motives of micro and small sized accommodation owner-managers to enter into (sustainable) entrepreneurship, the relation between their motive to act sustainably and the entrepreneurs’ value orientations, and the relation between their motive to act sustainably and individual values in relation to the number and type of CSR measures implemented in the organization.
