Johanne Hobel

University College Groningen

Johanne Hobel is currently completing the last year of her Bachelor’s degree programme in Liberal Arts and Science (major: International Relations & International Law, average mark 9.0). She is combining this with the Honours programme.

At the very start of her studies, Johanne completed a placement at an NGO in India that works to strengthen women’s rights and fair commerce in the production of hand-woven scarves. In the last year of her Bachelor’s degree programme, she completed a second international placement in an exchange with Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. As her research project there, she studied the position of indigenous women in Canada, in relation to the negotiations around global climate change. The resulting insights concerning climate change, namely that climate change will mostly affect the most vulnerable groups in society, made a strong impression on her, and was also the topic of her pitch.

Johanne is not only active in her studies, but she also worked twice as a research assistant, at the UCG and at the Faculty of Law, she attended a Summer School on Religion in the Public Domain in Lisbon, Portugal, she is active in various student organizations like the Traveling Committee of Caerus, the student association of UCG, and the United Nations Student Organization SIB, and she was the Green Office Ambassador for the Faculty of Law.

Johanne held an interesting pitch with a lot of attention for interdisciplinarity that clearly highlighted her constructive attitude.
