[English version below] Over exact een week is het zover, dan openen we – samen met iedereen die werkzaam of geïnteresseerd is in volksgezondheid en Healthy Ageing – de Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health. Lees in deze blog alvast iets meer over een aantal van de sprekers van die dag.

Koert van Ittersum, Capability
Koert van Ittersum is Professor of Marketing & Consumer Well-Being aan de Faculteit Economie en Bedrijfskunde van de RUG. Hij vertegenwoordigt op 15 maart het thema Capability. Koert: "Het hoofddoel van de Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health is om gezonde jaren toe te voegen aan het leven van mensen. De gezondheid van mensen hangt samen met hun levensstijl en wordt grotendeels bepaald door hun voeding en mate van fysieke activiteit. Binnen het thema Capability wordt onderzoek gedaan naar de mate waarin mensen in zijn om gezond te leven, de besluitvormingsprocessen die daarbij een rol spelen en de factoren die van invloed zijn op de keuzes die mensen maken.”

Naast Koert van Ittersum is ook Koen Lemmink, Professor of Sports, Performance and Innovation van UMCG kartrekker van dit thema.

Brigit Toebes, Justice
Brigit Toebes is adjunct hoogleraar Adjunct hoogleraar aan de Faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid en directeur van het Global Health Law Groningen Research Centre. Samen met Viola Angelini, associate professor aan de Faculteit Economie en Bedrijfskunde, is ze de vertegenwoordiger van het thema Justice. Op 15 maart vertelt Brigit ‘What law has got to do with healthy ageing’: “De wereld heeft te maken met een aantal zeer ernstige uitdagingen op het gebied van gezondheid. Een van die uitdagingen is de verandering in ziektepatronen. Een aantal daarvan houden verband met de levensstijl en de gezondheidsverschillen binnen en tussen regio’s, landen en staten.  Wetgeving en beleid spelen een cruciale rol bij het aanpakken van deze uitdagingen. De wet kan bovendien een concreet hulpmiddel zijn bij het reguleren van gezondheidsystemen en het terugdringen van ongezond gedrag.”

Catharina Hartman, Resilience
Catharina Hartman, Associate Professor van het UMCG spreekt op 15 maart over het thema Resilience. Het thema Resilience gaat in op de veerkracht van mensen in relatie tot gezond ouder worden. Een heel concreet onderwerp in de regio, dat valt onder het thema Resilience en de veerkracht van mensen behoorlijk op de proef srelt, zijn de aardbevingen in Groningen als gevolg van de gaswinning door de NAM.  De bevingen en de schade aan de woningen hebben de mensen in het gebied zeer kwetsbaar gemaakt: van de 130.000 inwoners met schade aan hun woning heeft ongeveer 16% stressgerelateerde gezondheidsproblemen. Dat is een toename van 50% ten opzichte van inwoners zonder dergelijke schade.  Catharina Hartman vertelt tijdens de opening van AJSPH meer over het thema Resilience. Naast Catharina Hartman is Katherine Stroebe, Associate professor van de Faculteit Gedrags-& Maatschappijwetenschappen vertegenwoordiger van het thema Resilience.

Sandra Brouwer, Participation 
Sandra Brouwer is Hoogleraar Sociale Geneeskunde en richt zich in haar onderzoeken in het bijzonder op arbeidsparticipatie en re-integratie van kwetsbare groepen. Meedoen in de samenleving is van grote invloed op je welbevinden. Toch is het niet altijd vanzelfsprekend dat mensen mee kunnen doen in de samenleving. Sandra vertelt: “Economische, sociale en demografische veranderingen hebben ertoe geleid dat we (ouder wordende) werknemers een plek willen geven op de arbeidsmarkt. Om dat te realiseren moeten we op zoek naar manieren om werknemers met een slechte gezondheid toch aan het werk te krijgen. Hoewel er op allerlei fronten arbeidsmarktbeleid is geformuleerd en -programma's zijn ontwikkeld, hebben mensen met een gezondheidsachterstand nog altijd een lager werkniveau en inkomen dan gezonde mensen. Door samen onderzoek met psychologen, economen en partners uit het werkveld, hopen we dit te veranderen.”

De tweede thematrekker van het thema Participation is Leo van Wissen, Hoogleraar Economische Demografie aan de Faculteit Ruimtelijke Wetenschappen.

Alex Friedrich, Sustainabilty
En last but definitely not least, spreekt Alex Friedrich tijdends de opening van de Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health. Alex is hoogleraar medische microbiologie in het UMCG en vertegenwoordigd het thema Sustainability. Als we met elkaar echt gezond ouder moeten worden, dan moeten we duurzame oplossingen verzinnen voor de problemen in onze samenleving. Een van de grootste problemen waar we als samenleving tegenaan lopen is antibioticaresistentie. Alex: “Bij ongewijzigd beleid worden simpele operaties of een behandeling op een intensive care in de toekomst levensgevaarlijk. De antibiotica, die voor een veilige behandeling nodig zijn, werken dan niet meer. Een probleem waarvan we ook vandaag de dag al de gevolgen ondervinden. Om echt met dit probleem aan de slag te kunnen, moeten we ophouden in hokjes, afdelingen, beroepsgroepen of sectoren te denken en grensoverstijgend aan dit probleem werken. Door de oorzaak van antibioticaresistentie vanuit verschillende vakgebieden te onderzoeken, kunnen we grotere stappen richting een oplossing te zetten. De Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health is de eerste stap om als universiteiten, overheden, bedrijven, zorgverzekeraars, zorg- en onderwijsinstellingen de handen ineen te slaan en een collectief beleid te vormen. Alleen door samen te werken kunnen we in de toekomst veilige en betaalbare zorg blijven bieden.”

Alex Friedrich zal zijn presentatie samen met dierenarts Drs. Maaike van den Berg geven.

These are the speakers at the Grand Opening of Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health

In exactly one week it is finally happening, we are opening the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health – together with those who work within or are interested in public health and Healthy Ageing. We would like to introduce (a few) speakers of the opening day to you.

Koert van Ittersum, Capability
Koert van Ittersum is a Professor of Marketing & Consumer Well-Being at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Groningen (UG). On March 15, he will introduce the theme ‘Capability’. Koert: “The main objective of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health is to add healthy years to people’s lives. People’s health is a function of their lifestyle and is largely determined by their diet and level of physical activity. In regards to the theme ‘Capability’, research has been done to study to what extent people are concerned about healthy living, to understand their related decision making processes and the factors that influence the choices they make.”

Besides Koert van Ittersum, also Koen Lemmink, Professor of Sports, Performance and Innovation, is representing the theme ‘Capability’.

Brigit Toebes, Justice
Brigit Toebes is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law (UG) and the Director of Global Health Law Groningen Research Centre. Together with Viola Angelini, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business (UG), she represents the theme ‘Justice’. On the March 15, Birgit is going to explain ‘What law has got to do with healthy ageing’: “We are witnessing a number of serious challenges in relation to health including a change in disease patterns, some of which are lifestyle-related, as well as increasing health inequalities within and between regions, countries and states. Law and policy play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. Law can also be a concrete tool in regulating health systems and in curbing unhealthy behavior.”

Catharina Hartman, Resilience
Catharina Hartman, an Associate Professor at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), is going to speak about the theme ‘Resilience’. The focus of this theme is people’s resilience in relation to healthy ageing. A specific example from our region that relates to it and puts people’s resilience at test, are the Groningen earthquakes, which are caused by the gas extraction, conducted by NAM. The earthquakes and the damage caused to houses in the area have made the residents very vulnerable: approximately 16% of the 130.000 residents whose houses have been effected, encounter stress related health issues. That is an increase of 50% in comparison to unaffected residents.

Besides Catharina Hartman, Katherine Stroebe, an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (UG), represents the theme ‘Resilience’.

Sandra Brouwer, Participation 
Sandra Brouwer is a Professor of Community and Occupational Medicine at the UMCG. In her research, she focuses mainly on labour market participation and re-integration of vulnerable groups. Participating in society has a great effect on your well-being, however it is not always obvious that people are able to actively participate in society. Sandra says: “Economic, social and demographic changes have led to an increased need to include and maintain more (ageing) workers in the workforce, and to find ways to better enable workers with poor health to maintain employment. Although active labour market policies and programmes have been introduced, disabled people still have on average lower levels of employment and income than non-disabled people. With hope that we can change this trend, research projects have been done in close collaboration with other disciplines such as psychology, economy, and with a wide group of stakeholders.”

The second representative of the theme ‘Participation’ is Leo van Wissen, Professor Economic Demography at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences.

Alex Friedrich, Sustainabilty
Last but definitely not least, Alex Friedrich is going to be one of the speakers at the Opening of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health. Alex is a Professor of Medical Microbiology at the UMCG and represents the theme ‘Sustainability’. If we should healthily grow older together, we do have to find sustainable solutions for problems in our society. One of the greatest problems we face as a society is antibiotic resistance. Alex: “If the policy remains unchanged, simple operations or intensive care therapy will become life-threatening in the future. Antibiotics, which are required for safe treatment, then no longer work. We have already been experiencing the consequences of this problem. In order to really get started to work on this issue, we have to stop thinking in boxes, departments, professions or sectors and we have to look for solutions across the border. By investigating the cause of antibiotic resistance from the perspective of different disciplines, we can take larger steps towards a solution. The Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health is the first step to join forces of universities, governments, companies, health insurers, healthcare and educational institutions to form a collective policy. Only by working together we can continue to offer safe and affordable care in the future.”
