Eten is overal om ons heen, maar niet per se op een gezonde manier. De kloof tussen weten wat een gezond dieet is en daadwerkelijk gezond eten groeit met de dag. Hierdoor stijgen de cijfers voor obesitas en diabetes elk jaar en mensen voelen zich over het algemeen slecht over hun dagelijkse consumptie. De Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health (AJSPH) heeft een Europese subsidie ontvangen voor het organiseren van activiteiten tijdens de Europese Nacht van de Onderzoeker 2021. Het doel van deze Nacht is om onderzoekers dichter bij het brede publiek te brengen. 

De AJSPH zal samen met wetenschappers van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Hanzehogeschool Groningen, UMCG en Forum Groningen - de culturele hotspot in Groningen en de grootste huiskamer voor haar burgers – onze haat-liefdeverhouding met voedsel onderzoeken. Ook wordt er nauw samengewerkt met het Instituut voor Natuureducatie en Duurzaamheid (IVN). 

Het programma bestaat uit 3 onderdelen:

Educatie programma voor basisscholen: hoeveel weet jij over eten?
Interdisciplinaire voedingswetenschappers, verbonden aan de Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health, hebben in samenwerking met het Instituut voor Natuureducatie (IVN) een educatieprogramma ontwikkeld. 

Het programma omvat interactieve workshops van wetenschappers met een multidisciplinaire achtergrond. Het doel van het educatieprogramma is het ondersteunen van het aanleren van voedselvaardigheden in het basisonderwijs. In gastlessen van een uur leren leerlingen van de leeftijd 8-11 jaar over een van de vijf thema’s: waarom eet je wat je eet, hoe word je gezond oud, wat gebeurt er in je lijf nadat je hebt gegeten, waar komt je eten vandaan, wat aten mensen vroeger. Voor elke les is een concept uitgewerkt met interactieve experimenten en hebben de onderzoekers ruimte om hun eigen onderzoek te delen met het jonge publiek.

Aletta’s Keuken: De Grote Groninger Eetquiz

Op 24 september vindt de Grote Groninger eetquiz plaats tijdens Aletta’s Keuken in het Forum Groningen; één show voor volwassenen en één voor kinderen. De eetquiz, bestaande uit uit twee interactieve spelshows, is ontwikkeld samen met onderzoekers, voedingsdeskundigen, burgers en kunstenaars. Tijdens de quiz zullen de deelnemende teams en het publiek opvallende wetenschappelijke bevindingen ontdekken over wie en wat bepaalt wat we eten. Tegelijkertijd zal het publiek meer te weten komen over het beroep van de onderzoeker en hoe onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd. 

Het programma moet mensen bewust maken van verschillende invloeden op onze voedselkeuzes (bijvoorbeeld reclame- en supermarktstrategieën, overheidsinterventies enz.) en hoe onderzoek niet alleen gunstig is voor het publiek maar ook kinderen en volwassenen in staat kan stellen gezondere voedselkeuzes te maken.

De ochtendshow wordt georganiseerd voor kinderen in de leeftijd van 7-11 jaar. Schoolteams uit verschillende Groningse wijken krijgen de kans om de show bij Forum bij te wonen en zullen samen met hun klasgenoten strijden in een quiz. 

De avondshow voor volwassenen wordt in dezelfde stijl georganiseerd als de kindershow met enkele aanpassingen in het programma. De deelnemende teams zullen bestaan ​​uit verschillende Groningse buurtgemeenschappen. Iedereen is welkom om de show bij te wonen. Interactieve installatie: ‘Schep maar op!’
Op de eerste verdieping van het Forum Groningen komt vanaf 24 september twee weken lang een leuke, interactieve tentoonstelling over voedingswetenschap. Het zal deel uitmaken van het educatieprogramma van de scholen, maar het werkt ook als een op zichzelf staande tentoonstelling voor het grote publiek van Forum Groningen.

De installatie zal bestaan uit een interactieve videocabine, een tot nadenken stemmende snackautomaat, maaltijden uit de geschiedenis en de toekomst, en zal ook meer diepgaande informatie over het onderwerp geven. Het vormt een informele en speelse verbinding tussen onderzoekers en de gemeenschap.

Aletta brings the European Researchers' Night 2021 to Groningen

Food is all around us, but not necessarily in a healthy way. The gap between knowing what a healthy diet is and actually eating healthy is growing every day. Because of this, the numbers for obesity and diabetes are skyrocketing every year and people generally feel bad about their consumption intake on a daily basis. Science can help people make more informed choices, to understand and sympathize with their behaviour and to explain our food environment from different perspectives.

The Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health (AJPSH) has received a European grant to organize activities during the European Researchers’ Night 2021. The aim of this Night is to bring researchers closer to the general public.

Together with scientists from the University of Groningen, Hanze University Groningen, UMCG, and Forum Groningen - the cultural hotspot in Groningen and the largest living room for its citizens - the AJSPH will investigate our love-hate relationship with food. There is also close collaboration with the Institute for Nature Education and Sustainability (IVN).

The programme consists of 3 parts:

Education program for primary schools : How much do you know about food?

Interdisciplinary food scientists, connected to the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health, have developed  an education program in cooperation with the Dutch Institute for Nature Education (IVN).

The program entails interactive workshops from scientists with a multidisciplinary background. The goal of the education program is to support the teaching of food skills in primary education. In one-hour guest lectures, pupils of age 8-11 will learn about one of the five themes: why do you eat what you eat, how do you age healthily, what happens in your body after you eat, where does your food come from, what did people eat in the past. For each lesson, a concept has been developed with interactive experiments. Moreover, there will be time for the scientists to share their own research with the young audience.

Aletta’s Kitchen: The Greatest Groninger Food Quiz
On 24 September, two interactive game shows called the ‘The Greatest Groningen Food Quiz’ will take place at ‘Aletta’s Kitchen’ in the Groningen Forum: one for adults and one for children. Both shows will involve a fun quiz, built together with researchers, food professionals, nutritionists, citizens, and artists which will allow participating teams and the audience to discover striking scientific findings about ‘who/what determines what we eat’. At the same time, the audience will be able to learn more about the profession of a researcher and how research experiments are done.

The programme content should raise awareness of different influences on our food choices (for example advertising and supermarket strategies, governmental interventions etc.) and how research can be beneficial for the public and can empower children and adults to make healthier food choices.

The morning show (10:00 - 11:00) will be organized for schooled children in the age of 7-11. School teams from different Groningen neighborhoods will have the opportunity to attend the show at the Forum and will together with their schoolmates compete in a quiz. 

The evening show (20:00 - 21:00) for adults will be organized in the same style as the children’s show with some alterations in the programme. The competing teams will consist of different Groningen neighbourhood communities. Everyone is welcome to attend the show after getting a ticket on the Groningen Forum website

Interactive exhibit at Forum Groningen: 'Let's dish up!'
A fun, simple and engaging exhibit on food science will be located on the first floor of Forum Groningen for two weeks, starting 24 September. It will be part of the education program of the schools but it also works as a stand-alone exhibit for the general audience of the Forum Groningen.

The installation will consist of an interactive video booth, a thought provoking snack automat, meals throughout history and the future, and will also provide more in depth information about the topic. It forms an informal and playful connection between researchers and the community.
