On 16 June Pieter Nanninga will be awarded a PhD for his study of jihadism and suicide attacks. In his thesis, Nanninga describes why suicide attacks play such an important role in the jihadi movement, and in al-Qaeda in particular. It turns out that the outcome of the attack isn't really considered all that important.
