Make the city greener with a facade garden

17 October 2024

Our climate is changing and especially places that are heat-sensitive, such as the city, could use some extra greenery. More greenery is good for biodiversity, reduces heat stress and also looks nice. Do you also want more green in the city? Then check if a facade garden is possible at your office or building!

Facade garden guide

To give an impression of what is possible and how you can create a facade garden, the Green Office has drawn up a facade garden guide. You will find all the information here, with examples and tips. Together we can make the university a bit greener!

In many cases you can create a facade garden yourself, but in the center of Groningen you usually have to ask permission from the municipality. The municipality checks whether a facade garden is possible and installs the basis by taking out tiles and filling the space with soil. Of course, you should also discuss this with your manager and the building manager.

When to start?

Spring is a good time to plant a garden, but autumn is also very suitable! The plants can then root well during the winter months. Make sure you don't plant when it's freezing. Is it no longer possible this fall? Then make a plan to start in spring. You can already apply for a facade garden at the municipality.

Do you still have a question after reading the facade garden guide? Please feel free to contact the Green Office via greenoffice@rug.nl.
