Beatriz Noheda is Professor of Functional Nanomaterials at the UG and leader of the University's Nanostructures of Functional Oxides research group. Noheda studied Physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where she gained her PhD degree in 1996. She came to Groningen as a Rosalind Franklin Fellow in 2004. Alongside her work as a professor, Noheda also fulfils various other positions, such as that of founder and director of the Groningen Cognitive Systems and Materials Center (CogniGron). In 2020, this research centre received a €30 million donation from an alumnus for its research into the next generation of computers.

Noheda and her colleagues are trying to develop new materials that may be used for electronic appliances in the future, for example in the data memory of devices, to save energy or to create electrical circuits that simulate how the human body works. At CogniGron, Noheda studies how these materials can help to create faster as well as more economical computers inspired by the human brain. For example, they are working on a new generation of computers that are better able to cope with modern-day challenges.

Noheda’s work and research have not gone unnoticed. In 2011, she was appointed fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), a renowned scientific society of physicists. In addition, in July 2020 she was awarded the IEEE Robert E. Newnham Ferroelectrics Award for her contribution to the discovery and development of useful nanomaterials.
