Broad UG support for AI Factory: it strengthens innovation and autonomy

10 April 2025

The Netherlands is planning to invest in an AI factory, with financial support from Europe and the region. This initiative is an important step to give a further boost to the region and the country in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI factory will be an advanced centre, equipped with a supercomputer and optimized data storage and aimed at efficiently developing and training AI models. This centre will support companies, knowledge institutions, and governments in applying AI in their processes and products. It will soon be decided whether funding from Nij Begun — as a financial contribution from the region — will be allocated for the possible arrival of an AI factory in Groningen. Last Wednesday, 9 April 2025, the importance of the AI factory was also discussed at the presentation of Nij Begun's Economic Agenda to the UG ranks by quartermaster Jakob Klompien.

Cooperation and autonomy

The AI factory will collaborate with the Dutch AI Coalition (AIC4NL) and other European AI organizations in the EuroHPC network. The AI Hub is already active in the Northern Netherlands. This will enable the deployment of AI technology in a broader and more human-centred way. It will strengthen the region and ensure decreased dependency on large technology companies based outside the EU, which will give us more control over our own data.

Added value for the region

The AI factory will give a boost to innovation, activities, and employment in the Northern Netherlands. Attracting and training highly qualified AI experts will be essential for the further growth of the AI ecosystem. This ties in with the collective strength of the region, where knowledge institutions are already working together as part of the University of the North partnership. The AI factory fits into this seamlessly and will help strengthen the network, making the region even more attractive for investment and talent. With the AI factory, the Northern Netherlands will not only have the opportunity to innovate, but also to remain in control and autonomous in its use of technology. Working together will strengthen the region and create a future where we can decide which technologies we use and how we use them.
