UG involved in technology education for cabinet plan to boost chip sector

The cabinet has decided to make a one-off investment of €450 million in technology education to support chip manufacturers ASML and NXP in the Eindhoven region. The UG has been asked to contribute to this.

An important part of this contribution is to stimulate talent that will be able to work in this sector, from vocational education (MBO) to higher professional education (HBO) and university education (WO). The UG is considered an important partner as an international player in teaching and research in the relevant fields. Together with other participants, the UG is invited to devise a national plan before 1 July aimed at boosting microchip talent. Jouke de Vries, President of the Board of the University of Groningen: ‘I am proud that we are being involved in these ambitious measures to strengthen the chip sector through education. Considering our expertise and experience, this is a role we can fulfil. Our Faculty of Science and Engineering will make a significant contribution. Dean Joost Frenken and I will therefore join forces.'

National plan to boost microchip talent

The aim of the national plan is to significantly increase the number, quality, and diversity of the students in the semiconductor sector, and at the same time boost public-private partnerships. The University of the North is also contributing to the development of this cabinet plan. An integrated approach is important to make joint decisions on collaboration and profiling. Existing plans provide important input for this.

Structural investments in the chip sector

The Government will allocate a total of €450 million for their plan until 2030 and about €80 million per year as from 2031. This structural amount will be available for regular educational funding and student finance, as it is expected that more students will be taught. The plan assumes co-financing of at least €225 million in this period, to be raised by regional governments and private parties.
